5 Signs Your Resume Needs Help

Resumes have evolved over the years, has yours?  Here are five signs that your resume is in need of an update:

  1. Your resume contains an objective statement.  Starting your resume with an objective statement used to common practice, but that’s no longer the case.  You’re applying for the job, so obviously you’re interested in that type of work.  Instead of an objective statement, use this space for a title (such as Customer Service Expert, Business Analyst, or Recent Engineering Graduate) or a value proposition.
  2. Your resume contains the line “References Available Upon Request.”  Of course they are!  Everyone should head to an interview with their references prepared – this goes without saying.  So don’t waste space on your resume with this outdated line, use this space for something more important that actually adds value.
  3. Your resume is written with mostly bullets or mostly paragraphs.  A resume must have a proper balance of white space, and having too many or too few bullets won’t make for a visually appealing document.  It also means that key facts could get lost in the mix.
  4. Your resume is longer than two pages.  Generally, most resumes are one or two pages.  There are exceptions, such as people with extensive project work, academic publications, or some C-level personnel.  For most people however, two pages is the absolute maximum.  If your resume is longer, you have some editing to do.
  5. Your resume contains first person pronouns (I, me, my, etc.):  This is absolute no-no in resume writing.  First person pronouns should never, ever appear in your resume.

These tips offer some good advice on updating your resume.  Remember to use space wisely and don’t allow important information to be lost in a sea of text.
