Professional Resume Writer in Calgary – Engineering Resumes

Since launching a partnership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) in 2014 I have had the pleasure of working with engineering students, graduates, and established professionals in a variety of disciplines.  Resumes for process engineers are obviously quite different from those for software engineers, but there are guidelines that apply to all engineering professionals.  The below information outlines the most important items to keep in mind when writing your resume:

  • Immediately list your professional designation.  Don’t make a hiring manager dig for vital information, list your designation (P.Eng, P.Geo, EIT, GIT) behind your name at the top of your resume.
  • Include relevant technical skills.  While some companies use proprietary software, there are many applications engineers are expected to have knowledge in.  Outline your experience using specific modelling systems, programming languages, CAD programs, etc.
  • Know your value How can you set yourself apart from other applicants?  Define what makes you a valuable employee.  When you did your job well, how did it benefit your employer?  Showcasing how you excelled in prior roles – and knowing how that relates to your career targets – allows you to brand yourself and separate yourself from the pack.
  • Keep formatting clean, fresh, and easy to read.  Engineering resumes don’t have to be boring!  They also can’t be as bold as someone in an inherently creative field like marketing or interior design.  Use bold text, borders, and lines..  This will allow a reader to easily identify key information.

Remember, there are no “rules” when it comes to resume writing, only guidelines.  Recruiters expect to see your employment history and education, among other things, but presenting that information in best way possible depends on your situation.  One final piece of advice:  proofread!  Engineers should have superior attention to detail, so make sure your document is error free.  For more advice on the specifics of engineering resume preparation please contact me at info@professionaledgeresumes.com.
