The Benefits of a Customized Cover Letter

Many employers still expect a cover letter to be included when submitting a resume.  Don’t include a “generic” cover letter that shows no indication you’ve done your research on the company – this is your chance to add a personal touch to your application.  Cover letters are written in narrative form, so you can clearly state your interest in a particular company, or a particular role.

A well written cover letter will explain the following:

1. Which job you’re applying for.
2. How your skills and experience directly relate to the job you’re applying for.
3. Why you’re a good fit to the position or company.

The contact information and body of your cover letter MUST be updated for each new application.  Carefully review job postings to ensure you are capturing key words and skills in your cover letter.  It’s okay to adapt and tweak an existing cover letter,  but make sure you change the date and file name each time.

With a carefully crafted cover letter you’ll have an edge over other applicants, so don’t pass up the opportunity to write something engaging!
