Professional Resume Writer in Calgary – Resume Basics
While the standards for a great resume are constantly evolving, there are some basics that will never change. Here are some key points when writing your resume:
- Length: Your resume should not be more than two pages in length. Occasionally, one page resume also work, but generally most resumes are two pages. If yours is longer than two pages, you need to cut it back – remove older content and keep only the most important details.
- Font: There are many fonts is MS Word that will work well for a resume, but keep it easy to read and recognizable. Also, the font size should not be smaller than 9 point for most of your resume, and the main content should not be larger than 12 point. Names and headers can be larger.
- Work History: Your work history should be listed in reverse chronological order – the most recent job first. There are exceptions to this, such as if your most recent work history is unrelated, but this can get tricky. If you’re concerned about your work history and how applicable it is to your target, talk to a professional about how to best compose your resume.
- Quantitative Details: Numbers sell. If you increased sales, reduced expenses, improved production, etc., list it on your resume. Adding a quantitative detail will always make a point stronger. This doesn’t apply to everyone – some jobs just don’t have quantitative results.
- Proper Spelling and Grammar: Some hiring managers will toss a resume just because it contains a spelling mistake. Triple check your documents before submitting them – they must be error free.
