In recent years, I have had the opportunity to complete several resumes and cover letters for clients in the healthcare field. In my opinion, nurses and support staff are some of the most important people in our society, and it has been my pleasure to assist them in the creation of their career documents.
Nurses and other people working healthcare must highlight certain areas in their resume: patient care, experience with new procedures and state-of-the-art equipment, and support of other healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals may not have the same type of accomplishments as a sales person or finance professional, but listing their qualifications in other areas is vital for a strong resume.
Additionally, it is key to mention credentials (RN, LPN, etc.) right at the top of your resume with your contact information. Make it as easy as possible for human resources staff to find your eligibility for certain positions.
Like any resume, those for nurses and healthcare practitioners must contain appropriate key words related to their field and industry. Remember, many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to filter resumes, and without the proper key words, your resume won’t make it.
